Starting up Mathematica on a NeXT or a Sun
Logging
in
Your professor should have given you a login name, "math111" for
example, and a password. When you sit down at a NeXT or Sun, it will be
waiting for you to enter these at the relevant prompts. Don't worry if you
get it wrong -- just try it again.
Starting up Mathematica
If
you are using a math class account (math111, e.g.), the Mathematica
icon should be clearly visible either at the top or far left of your
screen. It looks like a
complicated three-dimensional star, and is labeled "Mathematica". If
you can't find this icon, ask your professor to reconfigure the
account.
If you're using a NeXT (one of the black
computers)
- click twice on the Mathematica icon
to start it up.
If you're using a Sun
- click
once on the Mathematica icon, then
- hold down the
"Command" key (located next to the Space Bar and imprinted with a black
diamond), and press "r".
This procedure can give you an error
message at times. In this case
- click once on the
Mathematica icon,
- go to the menu bar on the far left of the
screen and click on the "Services" option,
- in the submenu, choose
"Open Sesame", and in the next submenu choose "Open on hilbert".
If this doesn't work, speak to either a lab monitor or your
professor.
