Because our jobs were finished on Thursday, we spent a few hours at Playa Bagdad (Baghdad Beach, beyond Matamoros) on Friday, before driving back to Texas. The next week, Spring Break, it would have been much busier:

This statue may have been of Columbus:

The siren of Baghdad Beach:

The plaque reads:
Plaza de la Sirena
"De lejanas tierras, viajando al
vaiven de las olas, caprichosas
formas de diversas maderas llegaron
a nuestra playa y son aprovechadoas
por el artista Manuel Terau,
para dar forma a la sirena
de la Playa Bagdad."

Vamos Tamaulipas
    Administracion Municipal 1999-2001
( in English:
Plaza of the Siren
"From faraway lands, traveling by the
(?) of the waves, various
forms of diverse wood are carried
to our beach and are used
by the artist Manuel Terau
to give form to the siren
of Baghdad Beach."

Let's go, Tamaulipas
    Municipal Administration 1999-2001 )

Changing rooms cost 40 cents each time to use:

Restaurants, shell souvenirs, rental cabins, picnic pavilions, the sea wall and the beach:

It was a little cool, so only a few people went into the water. Those few included Jen and Ethel and a few locals:
